From conscious rap with politically engaged lyrics to gangsta rap, jazzy and alternative, the Japanese rap scene has followed a varied trajectory. It has also evolved linguistically. Early rappers often used English, but over time the Japanese language has become the norm. This has created a new musical and linguistic identity.

Attango and Sonikem will take you on a journey back in time to the beginnings of Japanese hip-hop in the 1980s, highlighting the early artists and groups who embraced the movement, despite language and cultural barriers. Audiences will discover how Japanese rap began to flourish, influenced by both American rap pioneers and the unique realities of Japan.

Discover the evolution of Japanese rap from the 90s to the present day. A period marked by major events, unexpected collaborations and the development of various sub-genres. Learn how Japanese rap has evolved over the years, adopting new sounds and visual influences. A key aspect of the conference will be the influence of Japanese rap on contemporary Japanese society.
