Neko Light Orchestra – Concert as a tribute to Isao TAKAHATA

To honor the great animation director of Studio Ghibli Isao TAKAHATA, who passed on April 5, the Neko Light Orchestra will play covers of the most beautiful music from his films, from the heart-breaking Grave of the Fireflies to the poetic Tale of Princess Kaguya.

This concert has been designed by the Neko Light Orchestra for Japan Expo 19th Impact as a tribute to Isao TAKAHATA. It will include music covers from his last five films, including Grave of the Fireflies (1988), Only Yesterday (1991), Pom Poko (1994), My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999), and The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013).

Originally, the Neko Light Orchestra had planned an intimist concert for the 30th anniversary of Grave of the Fireflies and Hayao MIYAZAKI's My Neighbor Totoro. Isao TAKAHATA’s death made the group change direction to a homage concert to this major director. It will also include a few references to Hayao MIYAZAKI’s films which were created at the same time, often coproduced by Isao TAKAHATA.

On stage, the Neko Light Orchestra will bring together a piano, a violin, a cello, a guitar, drums, chorus and vocals.

This concert will be full of emotions, set between the memories of Grave of the Fireflies with music by Michio MAMIYA, the lighter and catchy songs of the tanuki in Pom Poko or of the Yamadas, the nostalgia of Only Yesterday, and the varying emotions of The Tale of princess Kaguya with the music by Joe HISAICHI, composer of all Hayao MIYAZAKI’s movies.
