presentation
Being both an artist and a teacher, Horan YOKOYAMA teaches calligraphy at Nagoya University of Arts. He decided to follow his parent’s steps, for they were both calligraphers, and started to perform in 1994. The same year, he won a prize during a public exhibition, then chose to extend his art to various fields such as advertising, entertainement, and education. He has also illustrated major Japanese rock bands’ album covers. His powerful and highly artistic style has moved many people despite the language barrier, and has thus made him an iconic figure of the modern calligraphers wave.
This year, he will come to the festival to present you his work at the WABI SABI area alongside many craftsmen eager to show you the wealth of Japanese folklore!

A word on the art of calligraphy
Calligraphy appeared in Japan more than 1200 years ago. This art consists in expressing letters estheticism as well as the meaning of words with a paintbrush and India ink. Calligraphers traditionally paint on washi, which is a type of hand-crafted paper that has been produced in Japan since the 7th century. However, we can now encounter a wide range of calligraphic expressions: some artists mix this art with digital technology, use paint instead of ink, or draw on various materials such as fabrics, wood, leather or glass.
