The koto is a stringed musical instrument producing delicate sounds that are often assimilated to those of a harp. It was introduced to Japan from China between the 7th and 8th century and was first played at the Imperial Court before expanding to the whole territory, thanks to some famous musicians' influence. Some pieces became key works in traditional Japanese music, such as Sakura or Rokudan, both composed during the Edo period.

Traditionally, the koto has a wooden resonating body, and bridges that can be moved to tune the instrument. Its 13 strings are made of silk and can be pinched with scrapers made of ivory. This instrument never ceased to evolve through time. It is now possible to find koto made of various materials, with 30 strings attached to their bodies.

The koto is still deeply rooted in Japanese culture, but has also been popularized across the world. Famous bands and singers, such as David Bowie or Queen, have used its sounds in some of their songs.

Koto player Gaho TAKAHASHI attended Japan Expo to perpetuate the instrument's ancestral tradition during a performance that combined folkloric pieces and modern adaptations. Her elegant moves and dexterity captivated the audience and poetically made it travel through the ages!

You can take a look back at this performance – as well as all the videos of the Sakura stage traditional shows – on JapanExpoTV, our Youtube channel.
