Chanbara Show
The group TOEI TSURUGIKAI immerses you in live action scenes with chanbara and samurai style!
Kyoto, also known as the "Eastern Hollywood", is specialized in Japanese swashbuckler movies. Come from the world of Kyoto’s action films, the actors and actresses of TOEI TSURUGIKAI will be at Japan Expo to perform live demonstration of chanbara fights and samurai techniques.
In 1952, the golden age period for Japanese movies, the studio TOEI in Kyoto asked Reijiro ADACHI to set up a group to develop tate techniques. Then, more than 100 actors from this group became real movie stars like Chiezo KATAOKA or Utaemon ICHIKAWA.
Nowadays, this group is still active and its members are playing in movies, TV shows, theater plays or festivals. For example, you can see some on them in the TV show Mito Komon or in the movie Battles Without Honor and Humanity. For each performance, they use traditional kata adapted for a realistic result.
Along with several action film actors, the group also performs live demonstration chanbara fights and samurai techniques: experience the most outstanding action scenes from Kyoto! And if you’re brave enough to give it a try, the group invites you to come up on stage at the end of their show to experience chanbara fights yourself.
