Sayo YAMAMOTO

Japan Expo is delighted to welcome the co-creator and director of the successful anime Yuri!!! On ICE: Sayo YAMAMOTO will be attending the festival to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Japanese animation with screenwriter Mitsuro KUBO!

Biography

Sayo YAMAMOTO was born in Tokyo. After graduating from Art School, she joined anime studio Madhouse. Soon she started creating storyboards for numerous shows and she had her first experience with episode directing at age 23.

She continued to storyboard and direct episodes on a variety of series, including several episodes of Shinichiro WATANABE's Samurai ChamplooErgo ProxyPsalms of Planets: Eureka Seven, and Space Dandy, to name only a few.

Sayo YAMAMOTO's full directorial debut came in 2008, with the adventurous Michiko and Hatchin TV series, and in 2012, she directed her second TV series titled Lupin The Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. In 2016, she imagines a new story set in the world of ice skating. She also directed and composed this incredibly popular ice skating series, Yuri!!! On ICE, which was rewarded with the Daruma of Best Simulcast Anime by Japan’s public in 2017.

She is also prolific in directing openings and endings of anime shows and has worked on the openings of Rozen Maiden: Träumend, of PSYCHO-PASS, of the game Persona 5, or on the ending of Attack on Titan. She has also directed Yasuyuki Okamura's Viva Namida music clip, which is also the opening of Space Dandy.
