Houkou NAKASHIMA is a sculptor and modeller, who expresses himself through different artistic genres, such as calligraphy. Born and raised in a temple, the artist creates around the meaning of life. During the earthquake that struck Japan in March of 2011, the artist witnessed the disaster first hand, he saw many people losing their lives, and others surviving. After the disaster, the artist used debris from the affected area, and created around the theme of “signs of life”.
For Japan Expo, M. NAKASHIMA invites you to discover his installations playing with Japanese characters meaning “signs of life”. He dresses a model with traditional Japanese paper and covers the stage with different types of papers. Using these papers that he cuts and tears, he covers the model to create a new form, expressing at once a “sign of life”, a new hope, and the creation of life.
